How to Keep Your Lawn Green Through Georgia’s Hot, Dry Summers

Understanding Georgia’s Summer Climate

Georgia summers are no joke. From June through September, the state experiences a combination of high heat, extended drought, intense humidity, and powerful UV exposure. This combination of heat and drought puts grass into survival mode. Understanding what you’re up against helps you stop fighting nature — and start working with it.

1. Choose the Right Grass for Georgia

This is the foundation of a summer-proof lawn. Georgia falls in what’s known as the “transition zone” — warm-season grasses thrive here in summer. Here are the best options:

  • Bermudagrass – The most heat- and drought-tolerant option. Goes dormant in a controlled way and bounces back fast. Ideal for full-sun lawns in Covington and Madison.
  • Zoysiagrass – Slower-growing but dense and resilient. Handles heat and moderate foot traffic well.
  • Centipedegrass – A low-maintenance option that does well in Georgia’s acidic soils.

If you currently have tall fescue, expect it to struggle significantly during peak summer. Fescue often requires overseeding each fall to maintain density in Georgia.

2. Water Deeply, But Less Often

5. Aerate to Beat Compaction
