#FeaturedFlower: The Butterfly Bush

Want a guaranteed butterfly and hummingbird magnet? Plant the scrumptious buddleia! This fragrant plant, also known as the butterfly bush, is a charming addition to your garden or commercial landscape and is guaranteed to fill the air with its signature fruity scent. The butterfly bush is also the Great Estates featured flower for the month of August.

This fast-growing, deciduous shrub with long, arching shoots can reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. Although the green leaves add a welcome bit of color to any landscape, it is the masses of blossoms that are so special. The Butterfly bush grows long, seductively spiked trusses from summer through the fall. If you are thinking of planting these bushes, be sure to check with your local cooperative extension. Some species of this plant are considered invasive species. However, if your area proves suitable, buddleias are pretty easy to handle. The bush does need full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. You’ll also need to space your plants between 5 to 10 feet apart, for maximum growth. The best part about the butterfly bush is that you don’t need to worry about watering, once your plant has had time to grow. You’ll need to water freely when you’ve just planted the buddleia, but otherwise you can water it once per week!

The butterfly bush also comes in a variety of spectacular colors. Most have verdant leaves and flower color can range from a deep indigo to pure white. Call the experts at Great Estates Landscaping to learn more about this wonderful addition to your landscape. You can be assured of sweet smelling success!
